HOW TO CHECK A JOB OFFER BEFORE YOU TRAVEL

1 November 2026

The search for seasonal work, an internship or a first job often starts on social media. However, an offer should also be verifiable outside the chat, especially if it requires travel, advance payment or sending documents.

Very high pay without clear duties, no address or written terms, or pressure to leave immediately are warning signs. Human trafficking involves exploitation through means such as deception, coercion or abuse of vulnerability. Not every misleading job advertisement involves trafficking, but concerns deserve to be checked.

Checks before making a decision

  • Independently look up information about the employer, workplace and person offering you the job.
  • If you use an intermediary, check their entry in the Employment Agency’s register. Registration alone does not replace checking the specific terms.
  • Request written terms in a language you understand covering pay, working hours, accommodation and expenses.
  • Do not send identity documents to an unverified contact or hand over the originals to be kept by someone else.
  • Leave the work address, contact details and a plan for staying in touch with someone close to you.

Everyday example  An advertisement in a jobs group offers transport and accommodation but does not name the employer. Before accepting, request verifiable details and a contract. If you feel pressured or suspect exploitation, seek advice on 0800 20 100.

Share this guidance with someone looking for work. In immediate danger, call 112 or contact the local police in the country where you are staying.
